Vegas June 2012 (WSOP)

Days 1 and 2
Last Updated: 2012-06-25 11:44:05
About a week or two before we were supposed to leave we added two days to the trip, but apparently even that wasn't enough for us. I went to work Wednesday, spent the morning taking care of some things, then walked into the boss' office and said something along the lines of "I got nothin' else to do today, I have little interest in doing any more work today and I have a crapload of vacation time...I'm outta here". Duane laughed and sent me on my way.
I go home with the intention of helping Joann pack and take care of some things around the house...and a few hours later we had a reservation for that night in Hurricane Utah and were on the road. Now it's going to be at least an 11 day trip...
OK "back story" time. Joann has been talking about doing a hike in Zion National Park since we went there last summer called Angels Landing. People have died hiking Angels Landing. No kidding, bring up google and type "angels landing deaths" and see what happens. If you see a picture that looks like it has red words on it, click on the picture and take a look...
So all along we were planning to stop off at Zion and do this hike on the way to Vegas. Our original ETA was 2:00pm. But then we saw that it was going to be rather hot at Zion and thought it might be a better idea to drive out the night before, get some sleep and get there in the morning before the heat came.
We get to Hurricane around 3:15am, check in, I sleep for 3 hrs, Joann not even that much, and off we went to Zion.
What an incredible hike. We have a bunch of pictures, Joann posted to her facebook page but at some point we will put them up on the clarkfamily site as well.
You have to see it to believe it. Chains anchored to the rock all the way up and down to hold on to so you don't fall over 1000 feet. There are spots where you have a 2 foot wide space to walk in while you're holding on to a chain and looking STRAIGHT down. These are sheer cliffs and there is nothing to catch you for a very long time if you slip. If you're in shape and so inclined, go and do this hike. It's really incredible, tho not for the feint of heart.
After that, quick trip down to Vegas, checked in at Luxor, had dinner at the Mandalay Bay buffet. Gotta say, not great. Joann really was looking forward to it because it's more seafood heavy than other buffets we usually eat at. But honestly the food was just OK, the desserts were not the best quality and not a whole lot that interested us anyway.
So back to the room for an early night. Our first day in Vegas often is a pretty uninteresting day after the long drive but this time it was long drive, no sleep, very strenuous hike, more driving so we're pretty wiped out.
Tomorrow it's all about poker. Going to sleep in and hope to be well rested for the 8-game mix at the Golden Nugget, my practice session for Tuesday!
Wish me luck!
