11-Game Mix
Last Updated: 2026-06-23 13:28:31
A deep run Monday, just not quite deep enough.
For Father's Day Joann and I just hung out in a cabana all day and had Emeril's at MGM Grand for dinner. Patrick showed up and hung out with us for a little while before going over and buying into the Wounded Warriors event at the WSOP.
Monday morning Patrick and I had breakfast at Salt and Ivy and then headed over to Orleans so he could play in their NLH tournament at 11am and I could play in the noon 11-game mix tournament. I actually dropped him off, went and charged up the car and got back probably 20 minutes in.
2-7 Triple Draw, No-Limit Hold'Em, Stud, A-5 Triple Draw, Omaha 8/b, Razz, Pot-Limit Omaha, Stud 8/b, No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw, Badugi and Big-O.
As in all the mixed game tournaments I've played in we play 6-handed, which is necessary for the triple-draw games. Only so many cards in the deck ...
After sitting through the last two hands of stud, my third hand in we're on to A-5 TD and I draw three cards with just A-4 and spike the nuts (A-2-3-4-5). And get paid!
Downhill a while from there. Don't play another hand of A5, only try and play one hand of O8 and the board runs out terrible for me. Three times I try and play a Razz hand that starts out looking great but I run out terrible on all of them. First one I catch two face cards, second one I run out 2-2-2 (can't make it up) and then face cards again.
I finally catch a break playing stud 8 getting a little lucky when I've got mostly low cards plus a 10 of hearts, it looked from the beginning like I was playing for a low and I was betting every street but I was really chasing a flush ... then caught two pair at the end which held up and nobody had a low for a nice scoop.
Then win another small pot with just a low and a big pair when everyone's board ran out horrible and we were mostly checking it down.
Lose a pot, win a pot in NL 2-7. I make a 10 and lose to a 9 but then pat a jack and it holds up.
Nothing remotely playable in Badugi and I'm at 28,700 at the first break down from a 40k starting stack.
Nothing playable in 2-7 Triple Draw or NLH and just like that we're back on stud and I've played all 11 games and sitting on 28k.
Win a stud pot I had no business winning, a guy who was definitely trying to steal antes completed yet again and I decided to call him down with 6-A-6 and see what happened. Well both of our boards were running out with disconnected cards, I called him down on every street ... and he finally gave up at the end and never caught a pair ... 66 good!
This is hard to do, I actually chopped an A-5 TD hand! We both drew out 6-5-4-3-A, but then I lose a huge pot when I actually catch the second nuts (6-4-3-2-A) and lose to the nuts. That was rough.
But ... win a small pot when I raise out with four to a 6-low, and then catch the 3rd nuts in a three way pot and get paid! From crumbs all the way back to 35k!
Win a couple of small pots in O8 when I catch a nut low and a bad flush that holds up, then the nut low again with the bottom end of the straight and all of a sudden I'm above start starting stack again for the first time since that first hand I won. Sweet!
Go through three games (Razz, PLO and Stud 8) where combined I tried to play one hand that didn't work out.
But have a great round of NL 2-7 Single Draw where I take down four of the six hands, in one case I was dealt a pat 8-7 (a huge hand with only one draw) and get raised into in my big blind! They called my re-raise but missed their draw and folded.
Lose a chunk in Badugi when I play a two card draw starting with A-A-2-6 but with two clubs so I'm really playing just an A-2 but I've eliminated an ace and a 6 from the deck. I draw 2 and they pat, so they already have a Badugi and I actually catch a K-J badugi, but if they're pat a king isn't going to win. I draw 2 again and miss and give up on the hand.
Nothing going on in BigO and back to 2-7 Triple Draw where I chip up some. First lose a chunk drawing to a 7 and missing, but then win an OK pot with a 10 vs a jack and then drawing two with 8-6-4 I get a 7 and a 3 and win a nice 3-way pot.
Back over 40k!
38,200 at the next break.
Brutal hand, No-Limit Hold'em I raise out with A-Q suited and get called, end up losing about 13,000 chips on a board that runs out A-K-J-9-J to pocket kings. Ouch.
On to A-5 again and I get crushed. Start out with A-2-3 and whiff every draw, start with A-3-4-6 and catch an 8 ... and lose to a 7. I'm down to 7700 chips. Not ideal ...
But, finally ... I get all in 3-way still in A-5 and my 7-5-4-2-A is good against 7-5-4-3-2! Back up to 25k!
Couple hands of O8 don't work out and I'm back down to 10k. Can't get anywhere with A-3-5-7 or A-A-Q-8.
Pick up some chips in Razz, steal antes twice and finally have a good runout back up to 20k at least.
Mostly in neutral through PLO and stud 8, win a few chips in Badugi and going into the next break I'm at exactly 20k, half a starting stack.
Not ideal ...
Get all-in playing BigO in a pot that started out 4 way, ended up 3-way and I chopped only the low half to get down to 16k.
But 2-7 Triple Draw to the rescue!
Start out with 2-4-6 in a 3-way pot, catch a 7 and a 5 and get all in and triple up with #4! From 16k to 47,500!
124 players, paying 16 places, 69 left.
Then a crazy stud hand. I'm up against a short stack and catch 888 on 5th street. All the chips go in and he has 555!
He pairs his 2 on 6th to make a full house ... and I pair my 9 on the river for a better full house!
57k
Win a decent A5 pot starting with 7-7-2-2-A, draw 2 and catch a 5 and a 3 and get paid! 65k!
My table breaks up and we're on stud at my new table.
Another crazy hand I ended up folding in, I start out with A-T-Q-T-3 and fold when there's a raise and a reraise into me. 10s can't be good with the one raiser showing an ace and a 10, hard for me to improve!
Well at the end of the hand it's a straight vs a full house A-A-A-T-T. Dude literally had case aces and 10s, I REALLY could not have improved!
But back to A-5 again, I make another 7-low and get paid and just like that 76k!
Nothing going on in O8, win a few chips in Razz, can't play a single hand in PLO. Down to 56k with 44 left.
Still can't play a hand in 2-7 single, down to 45k ... but then a full double when I make a 7 badugi!
93k and I'm feeling good about my chances!
But BigO was not kind to me. Twice start out with solid starting hands and raise out only to catch a terrible board both times and have to give up.
Start out with 3-4-4-5-X and draw two in 2-7, catch a 6 which is not good at all, draw two again and have to give up. Get all still in 2-7 drawing two to an 8, catch a 7 on the first draw but only improve to a jack at the end and lose to a 10 and I was done in 32nd place, 17 short of the money.
For the rest of the trip I have three days of various triple-draw tournaments. Patrick and I will be back at Orleans for him to play hold'em and me to play a triple-draw mix. Then it will be two days at the Nugget to close out the trip.
