Day 3 - Aria
Last Updated: 2018-06-11 09:17:03
There is officially a trend for the poker side of my trip only two poker days in, and it's not a good one...this will be a short entry today.
Wrote up yesterday's first entry, then Dave came down to Starbucks and hung out with me for an hour or so while I waited for Joann to wake up.
Dave's in a suite. He showed us the suite and it's amazing! If it had a stove it would be a decent sized one bedroom apartment. Except there probably aren't too many apartments where you leave in the morning, then come back and find your bed made, the shaving cream you used a little of replaced, etc.
He got us into the side of the pool reserved for suite guests. Someone to show you to a seat and unroll the seat cover for you (there are no seat covers, much less someone to unroll one, where "the rest of us" sit by the pool :-) ), lay out your towels for you...
Back up to the room and I finished up the second BLOG entry for Sunday so Patrick would stop text-yelling at me.
Lunch at In-N-Out, shopping at the outlets (there was a short tribute to Ms Spade posted on the window of the Kate Spade store we went into), Joann picked up a purse and a wallet and some sneakers. I came away empty handed, no spur-of-the-moment big purchases for either/both of us for a change. But it was only Day 3 and someone at that Kate Spade store told Joann they're getting new collections next week so it's a fairly safe bet we'll be back...
Dinner at Javier's. Really good Mexican restaurant at Aria I know I've mentioned in BLOGs past. It's not just us, the poker players often talk about it on the streaming from Aria on PokerGo.
Early into the tournament I pick up pocket aces and get paid! Flop came Q-A-rag, I bet the flop and he called. K turn, he led into me, I called. K river, I really hope he has a K and has a worse boat. He leads out again for 2000, I go over the top for 5700 or 6700, he calls and rolls over just the case ace.
Right off the bat I'm close to 30K from my 20K starting stack.
Big blind ante, which everyone loves. I think it will be the industry standard by the end of the year. Wonderful innovation!
Unfortunately for me that was the highlight of my day. I went completely and utterly card dead, even worse than the 8-game mix. In the next three hours I had exactly one pair (99, getting short at the time, all in, no action), AK off once (missed flop 4-handed), AQ suited once (raised out, shorter stack shoved into me, folded, he had AK); AJ suited once (raised out, call, over top, fold again, they get all chips in and show 99 vs A-K, K on the flop).
Tried to play rare suited connectors a couple of times, nothing. At one point I had J-3 off 4 out of 5 hands, had a run of 8-rag and another run of 9-rag hands several times in a row at different points...it was really brutal. Nothing I could do. I don't know how I lasted 3 hours.
Dave meanwhile had the opposite experience. Cracked AA with KQ (two pair) to roughly double up, later on doubled up his already sizeable stack cracking aces again with KK. I'm not jealous he cracked aces a couple of times, I'm jealous he actually got hands to play!!!
After surviving a couple of all-ins with junk shoving into limpers I finally got it all in and called with K-J offsuit...only to run into JJ. No help for me, done.
Dave messaged me that he ended up taking 10th place, good for him! His last message was close to 4am so I'm guessing he won't be joining me for Starbucks today!
Not sure what I'm going to do yet Monday. Leaning towards the 11am at Aria, but Joann is still sleeping so who knows what I'll end up doing.
