Vegas June 2018 (WSOP)

Day 5 - More Aria
Last Updated: 2018-06-13 12:26:47
Usual morning. Starbucks for breakfast, hit the pool after all, grabbed a shower and bought into the 11am at Aria.
Oof.
Not much to talk about. Wasn't totally card dead, had playable hands for a change. But...before we even got to the first break KK vs QQ, they caught a queen, done.
Met Dave at the Bacchanal Buffet at Caesar's to stuff ourselves, headed back up to the room, said our goodbyes to Dave (he put his stuff in the room since they gave him a 1pm checkout but a 3:30pm limo ride) and sat and watched the final table stream of the WSOP No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw that featured Doyle Brunson.
They said during the telecast that the godfather of poker announced that after that event he is completely retiring from poker to spend his remaining time with his ailing wife (he's got health issues as well). Apparently the players had agreed that they would cut off play early and go to a day 4 had Doyle lasted a certain amount of time. Unfortunately that became moot when he busted in 6th place.
Not quite "going out on top" but 6th place in a $10k event ain't a bad way to walk out the door.
On to the 7pm.
Like the 11am I had cards and was able to play some poker. Lost a chunk on 2 pair vs 2 pair, but got most of it back when I flopped a set with KK. Just before the first break flopped an ace with AK off and went into the break just over starting stack at 21600.
Caught a big blind special flopping trip 10s in a limped pot and got paid, sat a little under 30k for a while until I had a tough run of hands and blew through 10k of it raising preflop, missing and having to give up on 4 hands in a row (I think it was AKo, KQs, AJs and another big broadway hand, not necessarily in that order). Nothing on any flop, down under 20k.
Saw something you see in Omaha a lot but not too often in Hold'em in a hand I was not involved in. Freeroll vs freeroll!
Flop comes Ah-Kh-Js. Two guys get all the chips in, one guy has Qh-Th and the other guy has Qs-Ts. So both have the nuts and both guys have flush redraws.
Gets more fun with 9 of spades on the turn...river is a small spade.
Ouch!
I'm able to win some pots and build my stack up to 33k. Sometimes its the hands you don't play, tho, that stick with you. Someone raises to 4k, a couple of guys call and I look down at pocket fours. Since I only have a 30k+ stack I'm right on the edge of getting the 10-1 odds to set mine, calling and folding is really close...I fold. As it turned out I would have caught a four, there were two all-ins and with that and all the other action I would have more than quadrupled up.
I pull off a big bluff with nothing but a gutshot on the turn to get my stack into decent shape. I raised out under the gun with K-T suited in hearts, the only caller I get is the big blind who defended probably 95% or more of his big blinds. Flop came A-J-X, I lead out, he thinks and calls.
Turn is a blank.
So at this point I've already invested 1/3 of my chips in the pot, I at least have 4 outs and I'm up against a guy who would have defended his BB with almost anything. Seems to me there's only one thing to do...
I'm all in
Pause
"I don't believe you have an ace"
Pause
"Do you have an ace?"
Shows me the ace of clubs and folds...whew. Stack around 45k.
But then can't catch a break and fall back down to 25K with blinds now 1000/2000/2000 (it's big blind ante format) and close to going up again.
Shove in the small blind with nothing, steal the big blind.
Someone raises out, 10-10 on the button, all in, no action.
Two hands later 10-10 again, this time I get action from A-9. 10-10 holds up and I double up.
Just like that 82500 and in good shape. Then pick up KK, make it 7500 to go (1500/3000/3000 now), three callers but all go away on the flop.
Into the next break at 105,000! Above average!
Lasts all of two more hands.
Get back from the break, in the small blind and it folds around to me and I look down at A-3. I try and steal the blinds from the big blind who was a fairly tight player...only he woke up with 99. Oh and he had a small stack of 5K chips hidden behind his 1K chips. I get no help and blow through almost half my stack.
Argh.
Lead out with K-J off, someone goes over the top all in...I think about it and fold. Another 10k gone, barely 10 big blinds now.
Eventually get all in with A-8, run into 99 again but this time no help and I'm done. 29th out of 160 when they were paying 18 places. Close!
The plan for Wednesday is a day off from poker. Even the 11am tournaments are going well past midnight and my priority is the bracelet event Thursday at 11am so I want to get to bed at a decent hour.
Gonna drive out to Primm to hit outlets down there, they have a couple of stores the two big outlets in Vegas don't have and we have a whole day to kill. Probably going to hit the liquor store and do our shopping for the year but don't worry Patrick, if we go today we'll go back when you guys are here (or give you the car keys if I'm too busy :-) ).
