Vegas June 2023 (WSOP)

Days 15-16 - Aria NLH
Last Updated: 2023-06-23 08:34:17
Chose to take the day off Wednesday.
Had a nice day shopping with Peter and Grace, Joann and I had Eataly for dinner, watched some streaming and that was pretty much our day.
I should have taken the day off Thursday!
Starbucks, pool, Posh Burger for lunch and I bought in around noon. Over an hour wait, in fact I didn't get sat until 15 minutes or so into level 5, around 1:30pm.
Which I really was OK with. 30k stack, 300/600/600 blinds so I'm sitting down with 50 bigs, in 15 minutes 40-ish bigs. But if I'm being honest I would have rather sat down around the start of the previous round.
It wasn't until after 2pm that I saw my first flop. The only playable hand I had had in the meantime was when I had KQ offsuit in middle position, raised out to 2000 at 400/800/800 and got reraised to 7000 with a call in between. I went away, flop was all small, big c-bet from original raiser.
Called a raise to 2k with 10-9 suited, flop K-9-8, I check-called a flop bet, small cards on turn (checked around) and river, I led out on river and he folded saying "your king-four is good". If only my hand was that good :-)
Back in April I bought a green faced Movado watch at the outlets. They only recently started putting out green faced watches, but most of the time they use gold or half gold/half silver bands and trim and I'm really not a fan of the gold. Well, I finally saw one with an all silver band and jumped on it.
But it's kind of a dark watch, and a lot of the time it almost looks black depending on the angle of the light hitting it. You can't always see the green.
Well ... while I was sitting there folding every 6-3, J-4, 10-2 hand I noticed that the lights at Aria really brought out the green in my watch, which I commented to Joann at the time.
I had little else to do, certainly wasn't playing any hands, so I have not much else to talk about here right now ... welcome to my poker world ...
Blinds go up as I continue to appreciate the effect of the lights at Aria on my watch in between folding cards.
I remark to Joann that these people at the table at this point, any that are paying attention anyway, think I literally have to be the tightest person on the planet. I am not! I just have some starting hand standards and sometimes the cards don't cooperate.
Then comes the best moment of my tournament. Worried about my image that I'll never get action if I ever play a pot I look down at Q-T off in middle position and raise out to 3k. Only the big blind, who had just sat down three hands ago due to a bustout (number 200-something on the alternate list), calls.
We check around on a jack-high flop, again on a king turn, and I spike a nine on the river! I lead out for 2000, he calls, I get to show my Q-10 off.
This is perfect! I drag a small pot, maintain my stack a little, and I show people my range is bigger than aces and kings because I have to reveal my hand!
31,600 at the second break (my first). I lose the chip race, make that 31,500. Started with 30k. Just over 20 bigs when we come back from break.
But ... I literally do not play another hand until ...
Monster stack who was willing to play all-in as weak as J-T (and couldn't lose on purpose when all in) made a min-raise and a stack shorter than mine calls. Folds around to me with A-Q suited and less than 20 big blinds.
Of course I go all in, both call. 99 for monster stack, K-J for short stack, side pot if I can just beat the 99 would actually leave me with a small profit.
Flop K-J, no help on the turn and river, done. Played 4 hands in 2.5 hours. Brutal.
Chinese for dinner at Chin Chin at NYNY, streamed the poker players championship and had a whisky or three.
The plan for Friday is one more shot at Aria playing NLH while Joann takes Peter and Grace to the airport.
