Day 7 - HORSE
Last Updated: 2025-07-09 11:12:55
Not much to talk about today, playing limit poker there just aren't a lot of moves to make. It's more about playing good starting hands and hoping they work out. Unfortunately not a lot worked out for me...
Pool in the morning, reserved our cabana for Thursday while we were there and then lunch at Javier's.
Walked over to Horseshoe because that's where they run the "daily" tournaments, cranked up the app, bought into HORSE ... and got a seat at Paris. Seriously?
I wasn't the only one, pretty much everyone at my table had the same story.
Turned out that this tournament was a bit of a turbo. Blinds started out high (200/400 with just 25K starting stacks) and rounds were only 20 minutes. Two hours in the big bet was so high (600/1200 blinds so 1200/2400 limits) that a starting stack was just over 10 big bets.
That meant you had to accumulate chips!
Played one stud hand where I started out with all bigger cards than what anyone else had showing (AKJ), by sixth street I had a gutshot straight draw and a flush draw ... and rivered a pair of 5s and lost to a pair of 8s. All I needed to to was pair any other card, but nope.
A few hands later another stud hand I had three pair on 6th street (2s, 7s and 8s), didn't fill up on the river and lost to a set of 10s. My cards were very live (meaning I hadn't seen any of them as up cards for anyone else) but couldn't hit one when I needed it.
Won a small pot in stud 8 when I started with 4QQ, neither of us ever improved (and he was drawing low, I was not).
Losing big pots and winning small pots is not conducive to success...
For a little while I had very little to play, and whatever I did play didn't work out. Always ended up second best.
Finally in Omaha 8/b I get a decent but still not premium hand, an A345 "Badugi". If we were playing Badugi that's the fourth best possible hand because I had all four suits. In Omaha 8/b it's an OK hand because it's great for the low side, but with no possibility of a flush it's a little rough on the high side.
Flop comes 5-5-8, I lead out ... and it turns out my opponent only had a little more than one small bet left and put himself all-in. He was down to 3300 chips at the start of the hand, and just had a pair of kings in the hole and no way to make a low.
I caught a full house and hit my low ... but, my one monster hand I'm up against a guy with no chips. Small pot with a huge hand. Not conducive to success...
Razz was effectively my undoing. Massive pot, both of us with lots of low cards ... I ended up with 75432 and lost to 7543A. Brutal.
Down to 6200 at the first break from my 25K starting stack.
Won the chip race, but we're now at 1000/1500 blinds with a 500 ante in stud. Also had to bring in for another 500 once. Finally down to 4000 I toss in my ante and get dealt 25A. I can't wait forever so in spite of another ace being out I decide I need to take a stand.
4th street gives me another ace in a 3-handed pot. With two guys calling me down plus the antes I can almost quadruple up!
I pick up two pair on 5th street, they're just checking down ... one of the other guys in the hand draws out a flush on the river, I don't fill up and my day is done.
Brutal.
Back to the room to stream and read with Joann. Watched the F1 race from this past weekend, then more Main Event coverage.
Wednesday plan is brunch at Primrose and then PLO at 3pm. That will be my last tournament probably through the whole weekend as we've made several plans. Might not even play again until another shot at HORSE next Tuesday. Unless I actually play cash as I keep threatening and not doing...
