| Room change, SURPRISE, 2-7 mix Orleans |

| After my great day of TORSE at the Nugget I had a planned day off to change rooms.
| I was supposed to go from a Panoramic suite, the top room that isn't a penthouse or their two bedroom suite on lower floors at Vdara, into a one bedroom penthouse upgrading the room for when Joann is going to be here with me.
| I pack up, bellman comes and gets my bags with keys to my new room and walks me there with our stuff ... and it's a "City Corner Suite".
| Two levels of room below the room I left!!!
| But hey, it's on the the 54th (of 56) floor so it's high up, right?
| I call the front desk, and they actually try to insist I'm in a penthouse! As if I haven't already stayed in a city corner suite over a dozen times in the last few years. It's smaller than the room I left!!!
| After lots of arguing first with the person who answered and then a manager they finally agree to move me to an actual penthouse ... the next day. Meanwhile, Joann who isn't coming out until the next day because there's "no way she can change her work on Sunday" texts me a picture of the door at the airport.
| Then a screenshot of her boarding pass!
| SURPRISE!!!
| She figured it out, changed her flight and is coming out Sunday after all!
| I get Joann at the airport and we decide on Eataly for dinner since I didn't make a reservation, and this also changes the big picture plan because I'd rather do our planned cabana Monday and then later in the trip rather than twice in three days when we're here this long!
| New plan for Monday is that we stay packed and only pull out of the luggage what we need for a day at the pool, spend the day at the cabana and transition rooms after the day at the pool. Oh and Patrick messages me a code for 15% off at cabanas! Nice!
| And ... that was our Monday! When we had had about enough of our day of drinking and relaxing at the pool we got the call that our new room was ready. This time since there were two of us and we had keys to both rooms we just moved stuff ourselves and decide to just chill in the room the rest of the night.
| Oh, and it actually is a penthouse!
| On to Tuesday and it's time to get back to a little poker!
| "Mixed limit" 2-7 draw. And I actually played a game I haven't played before!
- No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw
- Pot-Limit 2-7 Double Draw (new for me!)
- Limit 2-7 Triple Draw
| I won't re-explain how 2-7 draw works, see the TORSE BLOG for that. The only difference is how many draws you get, the betting limits and what's the standard for what kinds of hands will win.
| I already knew that you could draw to hands as bad as a ten in No-Limit and a better 8 but preferably a seven in triple draw ... and quickly surmised and was proven out that a 9 is often good enough to draw to in the pot-limit variety. A lot of "9-low" hands won pot-limit hands.
| Big picture tho, this is not the best game for me to be talking about in a BLOG.
| "I drew and I hit my hand"
| "I drew and I missed my hand"
| "I drew and I made my hand and lost to an even better hand"
| "I bluffed and it worked"
| "I bluffed and got called"
| Basically there isn't a lot of strategy here outside of play good starting hands. No-limit is very easy, either you hit your hand or you don't and if you don't are you going to bluff? And if the other guy is betting, did he really hit or not? You have no information other than how many cards they took and the fact that they bet.
| Pot-Limit does have a little more nuance. If you call a pot sized bet you have to make a real decision if you face another pot-sized bet.
| Triple draw once you decide to draw 90% of the time you're seeing the hand to the end and either you're going to make your hand or not, and you need to really pick your spots to bluff.
| End of the day, doesn't make for an interesting BLOG ... which is a shame because I love this game!
| With all that said, here's how my day went:
| First hand out of the gate I start out drawing two to an 8 in double draw with 8-6-4-X-X, get a 3 and pair a good card, draw one and pair another good card (so I've eliminated good cards from the deck, which makes it a better bluffing spot ...) lead out and get called by a made 8-7.
| Very next hand make a pat Jack on the first draw and they draw one, we check it down and I get to see his 10-low. Ugh.
| Back-to-back 8-6 hands, first in Pot-Limit which is a really good hand and then in no-limit which is a monster! Get paid on both!
| Then I get moved to help create a new table.
| Lose a huge pot in double-draw when I catch 8-7-6-5-2 and lose to 8-7-4-3-2. That hurt!
| Still, 37,700 from my 40k starting stack at the first break.
| Pretty much ABC poker the next two hours to the second break, I didn't bother making any notes so it must have been boring. But it wasn't a great two hours as I was down to 25,500.
| Finally things get going for me!
| First I'm dealt a pat 8-7-6 in Pot Limit. Like I said, often a 9 will win, and I got paid when they actually made their 9!
| Very next hand I draw one and catch an 8-6 and have the big stack at the table betting into me with another draw!
| They miss and all of a sudden I'm up to 65,500! Sweet!
| But ... I draw an "8-perfect" (8-5-4-3-2, the 5th best possible hand) and the person I was up against had been dealt a pat wheel (7-5-4-3-2, just the nuts ...) and lose a big chunk. All the way down to 32,500.
| Pat jack in No-Limit, a hand you pat because it's ahead ... and two people in the hand catch 10s (I went away with betting at the end and got to see) and then I missed drawing to an 8 in the same game.
| All the way back down to 25k at what would be my final break.
| Lose 1/3 of my remaining stack drawing to an 8 in pot-limit, double up when I'm dealt a pat 8-7 in no-limit, but then bust out drawing one to an 8 still in no-limit and that was my day.
| I'm a day late posting this one, I'll just say that on both Wednesday and Thursday we had reservations for both breakfast and dinner each day. Definitely no poker Wednesday but I've made up my mind to jump into the 7pm at Aria Thursday after dinner so there should be a Friday BLOG.
| Looking ahead another cabana day Friday, Saturday will be a poker day I'm just wavering on what it will be (and I'm trying to get Patrick out here a day early!) and Sunday could be yet another cabana, could be a day 2, could be cabana and a late poker ... we shall see! |
