Vegas June 2008 (WSOP)

Day One
Well we're here. Made it in a little over 11 hrs. Might have been a little under if it weren't for a little...I dunno...error in judgement on my part.
I brought a big ol' container of iced tea with me for the second half of the drive. We stopped for lunch in Utah off I-15, I'd say about 150-180 miles from Vegas. So I get my tea out of the cooler, find a spot for it next to me and start drinking it. Without thinking much about it, I'm sipping here and there until about 15-20 minutes later I look down and see that it's almost empty. And I think to myself "hmmm...I thought that thing held more than THAT." Almost gone so I polish it off. Then Joann wakes up from her nap and I show her the empty container and she's obviously surprised and I say "How much do you think that holds". So she looks at the bottom and it says 2 liters. Hmmm...that's a lot of liquid...
About 10 minutes later I have to stop.
About 20 minutes later I have to stop again.
We're now about 80 miles from Vegas. So roughly an hour. And I'm pretty sure this is the last town we're going to see for that 80 miles. "I hope that was it" I say to Joann "because if I have to go again in 20 minutes we could have a problem." (or something like that)
About 20 minutes later I could use a stop. Desert and more desert.
At the 30 minute mark I'm getting a bit uncomfortable. Still nothing but desert. Exits that go in all different directions into more desert. And this being desert, not even so much as a 4 ft high cactus I could try to hide behind.
At 40 minutes I'm starting to eye the cup that Joann's soda is in. The soda is close to getting dumped.
I think it was about 55 minutes before we finally hit Vegas and found a BK I could waddle into.
There are some things in life that you do that you immediately look back on and realize it would have been fairly obvious to the average person that you were doing something less than smart. Drinking two liters of liquid in a span of 15-20 minutes when you're going to be driving for long periods of time through barren wastelands really isn't smart. Just a tip for all of you out there.
I was right about one thing. There is pretty much nothing between Mesquite, NV and Las Vegas, NV.
Now on to important matters.
Went straight to the Rio and completed my WSOP registration. Right up until that moment I could have gotten a refund. Really no turning back now. They gave me a new Harrah's Players Club Card with WSOP logo on it. You will all be sooooo jealous of me when you see it! Took a quick walk through the Amazon room, saw Chris Ferguson playing in what I think was a limit Hold'Em event. Found my table for tomorrow and we got a little luck. My table is right along a spectator area so Joann will be able to stand right behind/beside me. Scouted out the new dining area, passed Clonie Gowen on the way out. Joann was impressed that I managed to not even pause what I was saying as Clonie walked by. Clonie is on my list (that's a reference to a certain episode of Friends, if you saw it you probably didn't need me to tell you that).
Then dinner at the Luxor buffet. First time we were ever a little disappointed there. It was just OK. The place was fairly empty, I suspect much of the food had been sitting out too long because they probably weren't turning it over much. Not at all what I would expect on a Saturday night.
Then some shopping, Joann spent some Xmas money at Coach and bought another huge puzzle at FAO Schwartz ("only" 9000 peices this time, they had one on the wall...F-ing big, yet still only half the area of the 18,000 piece monster she's almost finished).
So now it's about 10:30 Vegas time. We're both tired, neither of us slept well last night and we woke up an hour earlier than planned and left. But I need to change my sleep cycle because hopefully I'll be playing poker until about 2:00 tomorrow and I want to be alert and awake at that hour so I'm going to go gamble some. If anything interesting happens I'll post it when I wake up Sunday, hopefully close to lunch time.
Or at least that was my plan. After typing all of the above up I couldn't get to my website. Got to it this morning, obviously. Played a little NLH cash, lost a couple of bucks, tried to get to website again, no luck again. So I went to bed and woke up at 7-ish...sleep cycle not changed. But it's not like I don't play poker until 2am or later every other Friday so I should be good.
